Job Overview
The Teaching and Learning Design Manager (TLDM) oversees the development of programs and curricula for Shorelight’s English as a Second Language (ESL), undergraduate and graduate Accelerator programs, transnational projects, and new program offerings. He or she assists in the development and implementation of academic policies and procedures across partnerships and provides consultation and support to Shorelight Intensive English Programs (IEP). High energy levels and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment is essential. Demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making, and creative-thinking abilities are equally important for this role. The TLDM reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, collaborates extensively with all HQ Academic Affairs team members, and manages relationships with senior-level university administrators.
Essential Functions
Learning and Development
- Serve as a voting member of Academic Quality Assurance Committees at assigned campuses, managing relationships with senior-level university administrators
- Oversee integration of English Language Learning (ELL) technologies to facilitate student learning
- Support professional development of ESL instructors at Shorelight IEPs, facilitating monthly meetings, conducting annual visits, and providing workshops based on program needs
- Design and facilitate professional development workshops for ESL Instructors
- Collaborate in training of new Global Citizenship Course workshop facilitators
- Support department’s employee engagement and professional development by contributing to program design for annual events
Curriculum Development and Implementation
- Collaborate on the development of ESL and Global First Year curricula, identifying appropriate materials, applying second-language acquisition pedagogical and assessment techniques, and incorporating industry and partnership best practices
- Provide instructional design support for Shorelight Live programs as needed
- Collaborate on the curricula for Global Citizenship Course and facilitate related workshops, updating and adapting content for different audiences and settings
- Lead academically focused working groups to develop and provide resources across partnerships and support site-specific development of essential curricula
Academic Policy and Procedures Support
- Conduct research on related best practices and present findings in a clear, timely, and organized fashion
- Manage teaching and learning projects using team technology, such as Wrike and Monday.com
- Support the implementation of international student engagement best practices among campus teams
- Collaborate with the Shorelight Academic Affairs department to design a portfolio of national academic policy documents, including Shorelight Way documents, faculty development materials, and instructional and student learning resources
- Organize and maintain team files using Dropbox
- Maintain cross-functional communication by contributing to Academic Affairs postings on intranet (Spark)
People Management
- Manage team of curriculum writers, outlining expectations for deliverables and monitoring deadlines
- Recruit, develop, and retain team members to ensure productivity and engagement
- Engage in talent management activities such as goal setting, performance evaluations, stay interviews, development planning, and ongoing feedback to develop team members and achieve organization goals
- Provide coaching, counseling, and corrective action (when necessary) to team members
- Foster a culture that reflects Shorelight’s values
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in higher education administration, TESOL, applied linguistics, or related field
- 3+ years of experience developing ESL, undergraduate, or graduate programs at a curricular and operations level
- Working understanding of second language acquisition pedagogy
- Experience working in higher education, private language schools, or other international education organizations
- Experience working with international students and multilingual populations
- Ability to work in a diverse environment and exhibit cross-cultural competence and understanding
- Demonstrated tact, patience, sensitivity, and diplomacy, particularly with non-native English speakers
- Eligibility to work in and travel freely to and from the United States without sponsorship
- Willingness to travel to partnerships universities and Shorelight HQ in Boston
Preferred Qualifications
- Record of exceptional interpersonal, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills
- Working understanding of CEFR and Bloom’s Taxonomy
- Familiarity with Wrike, Monday.com, and Dropbox
