Job Overview

Shorelight is looking for a General Manager (GM) to grow, expand, and scale our business in assigned markets.  The GM is a proven entrepreneurial strategic international leader driving student acquisition. Reporting to the COO, the GM provides leadership, consultation, expertise and line-manages Shorelight’s regional recruitment team and leads high-level account development and management of key channel partners. The GM drives and ultimately ensures the execution of a channel agnostic recruitment strategy across the region and multiple channels to maximize students’ opportunities and Shorelight’s revenue across its portfolio of partner universities. This individual assumes ultimate responsibility for leading the business in the region.  The GM explores areas for business expansion, new products and locations to house our growing portfolio of products, while maintaining our strong corporate values and culture while executing on corporate strategic plans in collaboration with HQ, while working closely with the senior leadership team in Boston and globally.  

This position is based in Bangkok/ Ho Chi Minh City/ Seoul/ Hong Kong/ Kuala Lumpur/ Taipei and directly reports to the Global Sales Director.

Essential Functions

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Growing the business:
    • Provide leadership, consultation, and expertise on special projects within the organization and ensure that assigned regions are positioned properly around all business, operational, and student acquisition strategies.  
    • Provide strategic leadership and support to assigned markets to achieve short term success and long-term growth strategies.
    • Responsible for growing our presence in assigned markets and ensuring that SL initiatives are fully integrated to deliver strong results.
    • Ensure that assigned markets are properly positioned around all commercial and student acquisition strategies and explore areas for expansion of our product portfolio that service the international student base.
    • Partner with senior leaders in each of the assigned markets to support corporate priorities and develop growth strategies for each market.
    • Identify and assess market opportunities for expanded growth in assigned markets. Collaborate with business development to identify and support new business ventures.
  • Scaling the business:
    • Work closely with Student Acquisition, Operations, ES, Admissions, HR, and Finance in assigned markets so that all departments are working collaboratively to ensure success, productivity, scalability, and operational excellence.
    • Enhance (and develop where needed) all relevant systems, processes, and procedures across the region to ensure operational excellence.
    • Establish “Best Practice” mentality in region for nimble and agile changes to market conditions.
    • Partner with leaders located in global offices/markets to help our team build organizations, working closely with senior leadership to scale efficiently, and achieve high performance across the region.
    • Coach, mentor, support, and elevate teammates in assigned markets to foster a high performing cohesive group.
    • Effectively build relationships and lead communication and collaboration where needed with key team members across multiple regions and lines of business.
    • Support and reinforce the overall operational goals and key measures of the organization across assigned regions.
    • Build strong cross-functional relationships to ensure that we have the necessary infrastructure, tools, and products in place for success.
  • Finding & Retaining Top Talent:
    • In conjunction with HR leadership, develop the right “people strategy” in assigned markets and succession planning to ensure bench strength and career development/retention strategies are in place for top talent within key regions.
    • Be a collaborative team-builder with a strong team orientation and the desire to develop, train, and mentor others.
    • Work with key regional managers and HR leadership to identify and retain top talent in assigned markets.
    • Identify potential People issues which may affect the company’s ability to meet our business goals; consult, advise, coach and partner with functional leaders on risks and mitigation.
    • Nurture a global Shorelight culture leveraging the best traditions from Boston HQ and the international markets that we serve.
    • Recruit, onboard, and coach top talent in-market; lead the team by example with a servant leadership approach and oversee all functions in the region, whether directly or indirectly.
    • Embody Shorelight core values and play a lead role to ensure the culture engages employees, resonates locally, and is consistent throughout assigned regions.
    • In conjunction with HR business partners, assess key leaders (Student Acquisition, ES, Admissions, HR, etc.) within assigned markets, as well as develop and coach individuals on the team.
    • Continually assess overall team capability vs. requirements and adjust as needed.

 Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, international relations, or related area
  • 10+ years’ experience in strategic and tactical business development, including fast paced sales and marketing environments, preferably within international education.
  • Experience in developing and expanding business in South East Asia and North Asia regions
  • Ability to think independently, thoroughly, and critically in fast-paced contexts
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders from local, national, and international constituencies
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent ability to communicate with people from a wide variety of cultures and linguistic backgrounds
  • Ability to foster collaboration and trust, work collegially, and inspire others to high levels of performance
  • Working fluency in English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Regional role in South East Asia and North Asia regions. These regions are inclusive of Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Mongolia.
